P3: Preproduction Documents and Ideas
You can also see the storyboard I have created. In my storyboard I have included the shots, angles and movements you will see in the animation. You can also see the scenes I have, the length, environment shadows and light. I have included a few notes about the sounds I will use but I will develop this further in this report, scene by scene.
Here is a list of what sounds I want to add to my Club Europe animation for each scene and how I will create them.
Scene 1 shot 1:
In scene 1 shot 1, we can see a map of Europe. We will be able to see the flags when each country is mentioned: "The UK, France, Spain and Italy are just a few countries home to some of the most famous tourist attractions". As each flag shows up, I could include a flag waving in the wind foley sound by using paper or some material and waving it in front of a mic. I think this will be effective because it starts to bring the animation to life from the beginning. This scene will transition to the next when it swipes to the right. I could make a swipe sound by moving a piece of paper on the table and recording this with a mic. This is effective because it keeps the audience's attention on the animation and it makes the animation modern. From this scene to scene 1 shot 3 we will hear some background theme music for Club Europe that I will choose. This will be effective so audiences will know who the animation is by and it builds on brand identity. I will also use the same background theme music at the end of the animation. I will be using background music throughout the animation when the theme music isn't played, it will stop at one point though for dramatic effect.
Scene 1 shot 2:
In this scene, when the tourist attractions are mentioned they will move from the left onto the screen with horizontal line and two
vertical lines will move down from the top of the screen as the
voiceover says "Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Louvre Museum, Eiffel
Tower, La Sagrada Familia, The Leaning Tower of Pisa". The vertical lines will move up again out of view and a swipe effect will happen to transition to the next scene.
Scene 1 shot 3:
In scene 1 shot 3, we can see the horizontal line still but we can see a violin playing music notes that float to the left at the top and someone kicking a ball to the right at the bottom. We will be able to hear the voiceover saying " Soon you’ll be visiting a
country with your school or college and taking part in a music festival or
sports tour with us, Club Europe". The scene fades out white and fades into next scene.
Scene 2 shot 1:
Here the character is looking worried with a thinking bubble shaking their head to remove the thought bubble and then putting their hands on their face. The animation goes from a medium shot and zooms into a close up shot of the character's face and the though bubble. In this scene, the character will make a worried thinking sound and I can do this with my voice and a microphone.
Scene 2 shot 2:
The animation abruptly cuts from scene 2 shot 1 to scene 2 shot 2 to show how frantic the character is. The character has an empty suitcase on the table with the character stood up in their bedroom at the table and a rain cloud over their head or maybe even over the top of the entire animation. The rain from the rain cloud will be animated as the rain falls and fills the scene with water. The voiceover says "Right now, you’re stuck at home panicking. Your room is a mess, you don’t know what to pack and you have no idea what to do at the airport". We will hear rain foley effects and I can create this by recording real rain.
Scene 2 shot 3:
In this scene, you will be able to hear the theme music. I am planning to use the theme music for every step in the animation to keep consistency and to also make sure that the Club Europe theme tune stays in their heads. Here you can see the Club Europe logo in the center of the screen with the text "Guide to: Packing and Preparing for Your First Holiday Abroad". The background will be the Club Europe blue and yellow colours to keep with the colour scheme I have been given by the client and I have been asked to use for my client brief. The voiceover will say "Don’t worry!
We’ve got your back! This is Club Europe’s guide to packing and preparing for
your first holiday abroad".
Scene 3 shot 1:
Here you can see icons that pop up on the screen. One is the £ sign, one is a passport and one is a plane. The icons will show in line with what is in the script. When the money sign pops up on the screen, I want the sound of a coin being dropped or spinning. When the passport icon pops up on screen, you can hear a page turning. When the plane icon pops up on screen, you can hear engine noises that I can create using an electric fan. These are the foley sounds I want to incorporate into this scene You can also hear the background music again in this scene. The script will say "First, there
are some things you will need to check before you can fly. have you exchanged some
of your money for the currency of the place you are visiting, Have you checked your
passport to see if it is valid, have you booked your accommodation and flights…
Wait, you don’t know what a passport is? " for this scene.
Scene 3 shot 2:
Here you can see the character's passport. We can see the front of the passport and the double page. The animation will zoom onto the double page. In this scene the voiceover will say "A passport is a legal document that confirms your citizenship and identity. We need these to leave the country and get on the plane, but also to enter other countries. Your passport needs to be up to date because it contains important personal information such as your name, birthday, signature, photograph, passport number, the date of issue and expiry. Now that you have organised everything, you can finally start packing!".
Scene 3 shot 3:
The voiceover will say "Step 1: "Make
a checklist. Instead of running around wondering what you need to pack, why
don’t you create a checklist?" In this scene, you can see the club europe logo in the top right, a checklist will swipe up from the bottom of the screen. Again you can hear theme music.
Scene 3 shot 4:
You can see a close up of the list and the character writing clothes on it. Here you will be able to her a scribble foley sound and I can create this by scribbling a pen or pencil on some paper. The voiceover will say "Instead of running around wondering what you need to pack, why
don’t you create a checklist? Look around your home and see what you will need
to take with you". You will be able to hear this voiceover through scene 3 shot 4 until scene 3 shot 6 since these scenes will be a bit short.
Scene 3 shot 5:
Voiceover carries on from last scene. In this scene you can see clothes placed together.
Scene 3 shot 6:
The voiceover starting from scene 3 shot 4 stops in this scene.
Scene 3 shot 7:
The voiceover says "There are certain items you are not allowed to take with you
on your flight, so remember to check the list to see what items you are allowed
to take with you". There will be a red cross across the screen with no fly items text in front of it. I could possibly use an access denied foley sound for this scene. I could use a buzzer for this sound or I could use the school gates sound that makes a buzzing sound when more than one person goes through the security gates.
Scene 4 shot 1:
Theme music since this is another step. The text on screen and the voiceover will say step 2: gather things together".
Scene 4 shot 2:
In this scene, we can see clothes and necessities to the left of the suitcase. The voiceover will say "Get your clothes, toothbrush and other items and put them next
to your suitcase, fold your clothes neatly and make sure you have everything you
will need". Maybe a foley sound of character placing the objects down. I can get these foley sounds by dropping clothes onto a table, placing a toothbrush etc.
Scene 5 shot 1:
This scene is another step, the text says Step 3: Packing Your Suitcase. The voiceover will say "Now its time to pack your suitcase". Maybe I can include a foley sound like the suitcase is being zipped open, I can use a zip on a bag for this.
Scene 5 shot 2:
You can see the character placing objects into the suitcase in the animation. These actions happen in unison with the voiceover "First you should put your heavier items near
the bottom of the suitcase so it won’t fall over when you stand it up. you can
roll your clothes up or fold them. Shoes can be stuffed with socks and other
items; toiletries can be put together in a resealable plastic bag". A resealable bag foley sound, I can get one of these from the coronavirus test kits and use the sound from this.
Scene 5 shot 3:
Voiceover " Don’t forget
to put any money you will need or other necessities like your passport in your
carry-on bag. If you are taking an instrument for your Club Europe tour, remember to
always pack your instrument in a case so it doesn’t get damaged.". The screen will be split in half (left and right) for this scene. Their will be a rucksack on the left that the character will place their passport and some money in. We can hear the character searching through the bag, I can create this foley sound sound with my college bag.
Scene 5 shot 4:
The voiceover says "It is advisable to have
tag on your suitcase that has your name, phone number and email in case it gets
lost". The character puts a tag on their suitcase, we only see their arms.
Scene 6 shot 1:
Theme music again with the text and voiceover that says "Step 4: Plan Your Day". I can use a clock ticking foley effect by recording the sound of a real clock.
Scene 6 shot 2:
First we hear a gasp foley sound from the character. There is no background music in this scene so the gasp is more effective. I will create this foley sound myself using my own voice. The voiceover will say "Whatever you do, don’t wake up late, rush to the airport and forget
any of your belongings, especially your passport or some money". I want to animate this scene in Adobe Character because this is a close up of the character's face and the speech bubble will say "I'm going to be late!".
Scene 6 shot 3:
Here you can see a GANTT chart I will create in Microsoft Excel and make the colours match the blue and yellow colour scheme. The voiceover will say "Make a GANTT
chart and plan your time. What time will you get up, how long will it take for
you get ready? Take the coach and plane times into consideration".
Scene 7 shot 1:
Step 5: Airport Protocol text will show on screen while the voiceover says " Step 5: Airport Protocol, the tricky part". Theme music plays, I want to hear a crowded airport so I will record this foley sound in college when students are walking out to go home. This crowded airport foley sound will finish on scene 7 shot 9.
Scene 7 shot 2:
In this scene the character walk into the camera shot and talk to the staff. The voiceover says "Remember to keep a hold of your passport. You will have to go through
lots of different rooms before being allowed to fly. First you need to check in,
they will look at your flight documents". Maybe I could use a check in foley sound, I can create this by recording the tills at work or using the sign in sound at college.
Scene 7 shot 3:
Close up shot of a boarding pass/plane ticket with a company logo in the top left. The voiceover says "and give you a boarding pass which is
your plane ticket to get on the plane".
Scene 7 shot 4:
You will see a medium establishing shot of the security room in the airport. The voiceover says "Next you will have to go through airport
security. They will check your passport and your plane ticket".
Scene 7 shot 5:
Voiceover " You will have to
place your bags and personal belongings on a tray, these will go through an x-ray
machine on a conveyer belt". We see the character's bag on the conveyor belt moving right. I could make a push the tray on a conveyor belt foley sound (I will have to figure out how to do this).
Scene 7 shot 6:
The voiceover audio says "and you will have to walk through a metal detector.
Afterwards you can pick your belongings up". You can see the character walking right into the detector them picking their bag up. I can create a metal detector foley sound by using the security gates sound at college.
Scene 7 shot 7:
Here you can see the suitcase being weighed and put on the conveyor belt that will take it to the plane.
Scene 7 shot 8:
In this scene, we see a character POV shot of another member of staff at the plane gate and we either see the character's feet walking down the plane isle or we see this in a POV shot. I will create a walking sound effect by walking and recording the sound.
Scene 7 shot 9:
The background music fades as well as the crowded airport sound effect. The character is sitting in their seat on the plane and we hear the click of the airplane seatbelt as they fasten it, the character looks happy. I can possibly do this foley sound effect with a car seatbelt.
Scene 7 shot 10:
The character is looking out of the window and we see clouds going past through the window, the animation will zoom into the window then it will flash white. Theme music gradually gets louder and is normal audio level in the next scene.
Scene 7 shot 11:
This is the last scene in the animation. We can hear an announcement foley effect (which I can either get royalty free from the internet or I can create with my voice) and the voiceover says "Step 6: Have fun! Thank you for choosing Club Europe for your tour, we hope you have a great time!". When this is said, we can see the plane flies and the Club Europe logo appears behind it. I want to add an plane swoosh sound which I could record on a windy day, I could create the foley effect myself or with an electric fan. The theme music fades as the plane goes to leave the screen.
This is my GANTT chart. I have included the dates for my animation and sound units. For unit 16, I have included when I will create the sounds, when I am going to edit them and when I will place them into my animation.
Contingency Table/Backup Plan
|
Problem or risk |
Risk level |
How to prevent or solve the problem |
|
Not being able to record foley sounds because microphone dies |
Medium |
Make sure microphone is fully charged and potentially take another microphone as a backup. |
|
Illness |
Low |
|
|
Animation might take longer than expected |
Medium |
Try and make the animation simple and possibly use tweening. |
|
Sounds are not clear |
Low |
Record the sounds and voiceovers a few times so I can choose the best one. |
|
Tripping, falling, and dropping sound equipment |
Medium |
If there are any wires, I should make sure they are out of the way so I don’t trip on them. I should use the neck strap if I am using a microphone on a camera and I should make sure the environment is safe to record sounds first. |
Here is my contingency plan. I have explained what could happen when I am trying to record sounds for unit 16, I need to have a contingency plan in case something goes wrong.
What File Format I am Going to Use and Where I will Record Audio
I am going to record and export my audio as WAV files. This is because WAV files are higher quality compared to MP3 files. The files are compressed for MP3 which decreases the quality, it is lossy. However, WAV files are lossless compression which means that although the file sizes will be slightly bigger, the audio quality will be much better. Since I have created an informational animation, the voiceovers and sounds will need to be clear. I have mentioned what sounds I will record for each scene. You can see this underneath the script. I will need to go to different locations (if required since some sounds might only be in a certain location) and use different objects to create my sound effects. When I only need to record the sounds of objects, I can record this either at home or in the media cupboard in college which is ideal for recording sound (no people, not a noise...).
Foley Sounds Practice
To help me understand how to create foley sounds, I have created some foley sounds with my group for the Nightmare Before Christmas song Jack's Lament. We did this by using normal everyday items to create the sound effects of: Jack walking, jumping on the gravestones, the sounds of this bones moving and cracking, when he pops off his head, when Zero barks and appears. As you can see we have used lots of different objects to achieve these sounds. Rock (the sweets you can buy from the seaside) for the bones, dropped some folders for when the jumps onto gravestones, we walked around college to get footsteps, scrunched up some paper bags for the bone joints and one of us did a bark and whoosh sound.
Here you can see us recording the sound of the folders dropping for the jumping on gravestones foley sound effect.
